As a member, I am impressed with the quality of training the district provides and as a resident of Halesite, I am grateful to have the fire house at the bottom of the hill always ready to answer ambulance and fire calls.

Friday, September 18, 2009

Halesite firefighters responded to three hazardous materials calls over a five week period in late summer 2009.

On August 2nd, Halesite responded to a local marina where a boat's bilge was inadvertantly filled with 10 gallons of gasoline. On September 14th, Halesite responded to a large heating oil spill at a private residence on Bay Avenue. On September 17th, Halesite was called to a hydrochloric acid spill at the Head of the Bay Club.

Pictured above is a Halesite firefighter emerging from the spill at the Head of the Bay Club.

All firefighters in Suffolk County receive training on how to handle Basic Hazardous Materials calls. They are supported by more specialized resources located throughout the county.
