The fire service can be challenging, as well as rewarding. I believe that no matter how long you are a member (and I have been a member since 1968), you can never say, "I have seen it all!" While many alarms are routine, eventually you use your training and skills to cope with a situation that you have not encountered before.

2010 Fourth Busiest On Record for Halesite

The Halesite Fire Department responded to 559 alarms in 2010, making it the fourth busiest year on record. There were a total of 206 fire calls, up slightly from 2009's 191, and 353 rescue alarms, down 24 from 2009. Halesite's busiest year was in 2000 when there were 613 calls.

In total, the 60 members of the Halesite Fire Department volunteered 10,825 hours in 2010. This equates to approximately 180 hours per person per year. While a substantial commitment, each person's contribution averaged 3.47 hours per week, a manageable level that allows our volunteers to balance the fire department with family and work obligations.
