Halesite's Recruitment Open House Events a Success
Friday, July 22, 2011
1st Assistant Chief and membership coordinator, Dan McConnell, declared Halesite's two recruitment open house events a success as 15 people from the community came down to learn about what it means to be a member. The two events, one on July 16th and the other on July 20th, were promoted through signs and banners funded by the Town of Huntington Fire Marshall's Office.
Additional promotion occurred through a personal appeal mailed to each resident's home within the fire district by Chief Andy Magerle. In the letter, Chief Magerle wrote, "Our membership is at the lowest level since 1985, yet the number of annual alarms is up nearly 150% ."
Residents came to hear about the different roles within the Department available to volunteers as well as the nature of the commitment. During the open house, prospective members were given the chance to sit inside several trucks as well as use the Department's "Jaws of Life" extrication tool. Some even chose to spray water through one of the booster lines set up on the building's ramp.
In addition to the 15 people who attended Halesite's recruitment open house, 7 other residents came down to the fire department separately or otherwise expressed interest in joining, bringing the total of prospective members to 22.
1st Assistant Chief McConnell is grateful for the outpouring of interest in the Halesite Fire Department and hopes as many people will join as possible. He also thanks local media outlets for supporting the event including Newsday, The Village Tattler, Huntington Patch and HuntingtonBuzz.
