Severe Weather Strikes Long Island's North Shore

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Severe thunderstorms and wind driven downpours hit the North Shore of Long Island late yesterday causing many alarms for the fire service. Halesite was called to wires burning on Bay Avenue. Upon closer inspection it turned out that a nearby tree had been hit directly by lightning, causing debris to be thrown in a 50 yard radius. The debris may have damaged the primary electrical wires across the street leading to a small fire.

Pictured at right is the tree hit by lightning. Bay Avenue was temporarily closed by Huntington Bay Police until the tree could be cleared. Halesite responded with an engine and 10 members under the command of Chief Andy Magerle.
