Hurricane Irene Keeps Halesite Firefighters Busy

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Members of the Halesite Fire Department were very busy responding to calls during Hurricane Irene this past weekend. Members responded to a total of 48 calls during the storm, most involving downed trees and power lines.

Halesite's members, under the command of Chief Andy Magerle, stood-by during the storm and were out on Saturday night and well into Sunday afternoon clearing roads so apparatus could respond to fire and rescue emergencies. In addition to responding to alarms, members also helped residents from the community who sought refuge from the storm at the Halesite firehouse.

While the storm has moved out of the immediate area, hurricane-related calls have continued to come in since Sunday. Firefighters have responded to gas and oil burner emergencies, as well as automatic fire alarms as power slowly comes back to District residents.

The Halesite Fire Department wishes to thank residents for cooperating during the storm by staying inside their homes and limiting calls to situations that were true emergencies. The Department also thanks those members who dedicated so much time during the stand-by as well as their families who were without them.
