October is Fire Prevention Month

Monday, October 17, 2011

October is Fire Prevention Month. As such, residents are reminded to take time out to review fire safety procedures with their families. Here are some ways to do so:

Test smoke detectors and replace batteries. Smoke detectors should be placed on all floors inside a private dwelling including the basement and garage. They should be placed on ceilings in hallways outside of all bedrooms in the house. If you need to replace your smoke detector, consider buying a combination smoke/carbon monoxide detector for added protection.

Practice Exit Drills in the Home. Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00 pm is the annual Exit Drills in the Home (E.D.I.T.H.) community awareness event. This is a date set aside to remind homeonwers to review their family's exit plan should there be a fire. Adults should develop a safe exit plan with children and other occupants of the residence complete with a rally point somewhere safely away from the building. Families should practice evacuating from the house following this plan so everyone is familiar with it.

Attend Halesite's annual Open House. On Friday, October 21st, Halesite Fire Department will be hosting its annual Open House from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm at fire headquarters. Residents are invited to attend along with friends and family. Attendees will learn about fire safety in the home through numerous demonstrations. We will aslo demonstrate "Jaws of Life" extrication equipment on a motor vehicle. A raffle will be held and Halesite's Ladies Auxiliary will be on hand to serve refreshments. Please join us for an informative evening!
