The fire service can be challenging, as well as rewarding. I believe that no matter how long you are a member (and I have been a member since 1968), you can never say, "I have seen it all!" While many alarms are routine, eventually you use your training and skills to cope with a situation that you have not encountered before.

Hydrant and Telephone Pole Damaged in Early Morning Motor Vehicle Accident in Halesite

Saturday, January 14, 2012

The Halesite Fire Department was called to a water emergency at 3:30 am this morning on Vineyard Road and Baywood. Upon arrival, Chief Andy Magerle came upon a single car Motor Vehicle Accident - the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a telephone pole and fire hydrant. The pole was visibly cracked at the base and the hydrant torn away from the main creating a flooding condition on Vineyard Road. The driver, who was not entrapped, was taken by ambulance to Huntington Hospital.

Due to the cold weather and icy road conditions created by the water flowing freely from the damaged hydrant, Chief Magerle called for sanders from the Town of Huntington Highway Department. Chief Magerle also called for local water and electric utilities to respond to the scene. By 5:00 pm Saturday, the Suffolk County Water Authority had replaced the hydrant and a new telephone pole was installed next to the damaged one. Additionally, Town of Huntington road sweepers were finishing removal of the sand put on the road earlier in the morning.

The photo above shows the damage caused to the driver's Jeep as a result of the collision. Halesite reported no injuries and was back in service by 4:00 am.
