Rep. Timothy H. Bishop, D-N.Y. (1st CD), issued the following news release:

Congressmen Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) and Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) announced that a federal fire grant of $791,600 has been awarded to the Smithtown, Kings Park, Melville, Halesite, and Centerport Fire Departments from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The grant will be divided among the five departments and will be used to purchase upgraded breathing equipment commonly known as Scott Packs for responders to fire calls.

"This significant grant will give Smithtown, Kings Park, Melville, Halesite, and Centerport firefighters the tools they need to protect themselves as they work to keep our families and communities safe," said Congressman Tim Bishop, who will congratulate the Smithtown Fire Department at their annual Installation Dinner on April 14. "I strongly support the Fire Grant program because it leverages federal resources to ensure local first responders have the best equipment available without relying solely on local taxpayers."

"We must do everything we can to protect those who protect us. This grant ensures that firefighters in Smithtown, Kings Park, Melville, Halesite, and Centerport have the most up-to-date equipment and tools to keep their communities and themselves safe," said Congressman Steve Israel.

"This grant comes as a result of an innovative regional partnership among the departments and will help make sure our firemen are safe as they do their job protecting lives and property in fire emergencies," said Smithtown Fire Department Secretary Thomas Buffa.

Congressman Bishop regularly hosts fire grant workshops with DHS personnel and local first responders in order to give Long Island fire departments the tools they need to write successful grant applications. Representatives from Kings Park Fire Department attended Congressman Bishop's 2010 workshop.
