21 Halesite Members Receive President's Volunteer Service Award

On May 1, 2012, 21 members of the Halesite Fire Department received the PresidentÂ’s Volunteer Service Award. The recognition was started under President Bush as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. The PresidentÂ’s Call to Service Award is the highest award under the program and given to people who volunteered 4,000 hours or more of service over their lifetime.
The recipients of this award were Doug Anthonsen, John Blanda, Mark Blanda, John Cannon, Greg Colonna, Gerry Conway, Frank Grasso, Tom Holly, Roger Ketcham, Craig Lanigan, Andy Magerle, Dennis Magerle, Mike Magerle, Peter Magerle, Kurt Martin, Dan McConnell, Don Pope, Walt Sammis, Jeff Schondebare, Dennis Troup, Peter Wilbur.
Each member received a letter of congratulations from President Obama, a certificate recognizing their accomplishment, as well as a special pin denoting the achievement. The pin's image is shown at right.
