Halesite Rescues Osprey Caught in Antenna

Thursday, August 2, 2012

The Halesite Fire Department was called to an unusual alarm yesterday afternoon for an Osprey caught in a television antenna. The large bird got its leg and one talon caught while perched atop the antenna on a residence close to the water in Huntington Bay.

The unusal emergency called for unusual resources to resolve. Halesite members Mike Conforti and Alex Niedziela joined a representative from Volunteers for Wildlife in safely rescuing the bird. It was later reported by Volunteers for Wildlife that the Osprey is receiving care at its hospital in Locust Valley for a wound and swelling to his leg. A full recovery is expected and the Osprey will be returned back to Huntington Bay to rejoin its natural habitat.

Pictured at right are Halesite's members assisting the representative from Volunteers for Wildlife in the rescue. The operation took place under the command of Chief Andy Magerle.
