Colder Weather Sparks Two Fires in Halesite

Monday, December 17, 2012

The Halesite Fire Department responded to two fires so far this month brought on by the colder weather.

On Friday, December 7th, Halesite Responded to a structure fire on North New York Avenue in a stand-alone commercial occupancy. The daytime fire, brought on by use of a wood burning stove, was confined to the ceiling and roof area around the stove's chimney.

Halesite's members were under the command of newly elected Chief Dan McConnell and newly elected 2nd Assistant Chief Jamie Magerle. Members extinguished the fire and opened up the impacted area for extension. Huntington Fire Department provided a Rapid Intervenion Team under the command of 1st Assistant Chief Bob Berry.

The second alarm occurred last night just before 9:00 pm. This was a chimney fire on Old Town Lane. Over 30 Halesite firefighters responded to the call and brought the emergency under control by 9:25 pm. Chief Dan McConnell along with Assistant Chiefs Greg Colonna and Jamie Magerle were on the scene.
