Sunday, May 5, 2013
During its 112th Annual Inspection Dinner on May 4, 2013, Halesite Fire Department named two new members, Steve Medici and Wayne Jeno, Rookies of the Year. Both members have less than two years of service to the Department, but were stand-out performers in 2012.
Steve Medici is a member of Halesite's Hose Rescue Company and, since joining the Halesite Fire Department, has completed Firefighter I and the rigorous Basic EMT program. In 2012 he responded to 38% of all fire calls and 35% of all rescues. In total Steve logged over 604 hours in Halesite in 2012 the most of any member be far. During the year he responded to over 100 Rescue calls and achieved the Departments Silver Award. In addition, Steve participated on many committees and wrote several articles on behalf of the Public Information Office.
Wayne Jeno is a member of Halesite's Engine Company. Since joining the Department less than two years ago he has become a model of how a new member can effectively transition into the volunteer fire service. In speaking about Wayne, Chief McConnell remarked that "his attitude as a new member was exemplary as was his attention to training. In 2012 Wayne responded to 55% of all fire calls and 41% of all rescue calls. In total he logged 499 hours in service to the community and participated on many committees.
