The fire service can be challenging, as well as rewarding. I believe that no matter how long you are a member (and I have been a member since 1968), you can never say, "I have seen it all!" While many alarms are routine, eventually you use your training and skills to cope with a situation that you have not encountered before.

Hands-Only CPR a Hit in Halesite

Monday, July 28, 2014

Last Thursday, July 24th, the Halesite Fire Department hosted a Hands-Only CPR class to educate members of the community on this life saving skill. According to the American Heart Association, adults who received Hands-Only CPR from a bystander were more likely to survive than those who didn't receive any type of CPR from a bystander. The simpler Hands-Only technique may help overcome panic and hesitation to act.

30 attendees learned how to recognize the signs of a heart attack, the most effective way to give chest compressions, and practiced giving compressions to the Bee Gee's "Stayin Alive"; the official soundtrack of Hands-Only CPR. They also learned how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on someone who is choking.

Thanks to our instructors Brad Gaito, Kate Kuntz and Erik Weber. Thanks also to the Huntington Community First Aid Squad for loaning out their additional manikins to allow for such a large group to learn.
