Firefighters swarmed on a Huntington village office building Tuesday evening after a two-story office building at 191 New York Ave. was devoured by flames.

Police said the call came in at 7:43 p.m. reporting a fire at the building, which officials said was unoccupied at the time of the blaze. New York Avenue was closed in both directions at the intersections of Gibson Street and Leverich Place as of 8:45 p.m.

The fire appeared to originate from the rear of the office building and quickly grew in intensity. Within minutes, an intense inferno consumed the rear of the building and progressed toward New York Avenue as volunteer firefighters scrambled for position to attack the blaze. Firefighters began dousing the flames with a ladder truck at approximately 8 p.m., as police officers on the ground moved curious spectators away from the growing blaze.

The office building was home until this evening to the Ten Haagen Financial Group and a number of law firms. James Matthews, who was elected to the District Court bench last November, had his law offices there before becoming a judge.
