Fire Prevention Open House This Sunday 10/2/16
Friday, September 30, 2016
Does your home have a smoke alarm? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the answer is likely yes: NFPA research shows that most American homes have at least one. But do you know how old your smoke alarms are? If you're like most people, you're probably not so sure. The NFPA is promoting this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Don't Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years", to better educate the public about the critical importance of knowing how old their smoke alarms are and replacing them once they're 10 years old. To find out how old your smoke alarm is and its expiration date, simply look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase).
Sunday October 2nd, from 2:00-4:00pm, the Halesite Fire Department invites all residents and their families to our annual Fire Prevention Open House to learn about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them regularly, and replacing them promptly. We have arranged for numerous live demonstrations including fire evacuation instructions using Huntington FD's Smoke House trailer, effective use of extinguishers with live fire, instructions on how to avoid kitchen fires, how to perform hands-only CPR, Blood Pressure screenings, plus tours of the firehouse, tours of our apparatus and more.
Just as in years past, this year's open house will be a great time for residents of the community and their children to learn more about fire prevention and to meet some of the men and women who volunteer as firefighters or EMT's. There will be free BBQ refreshments, contests and prizes for kids and adults
