Halesite Members Recognized for CPR Save
Wednesday, December 14, 2022
The Halesite Fire Department was honored at a Town Board meeting this week for their life saving efforts on November 8th 2022. In the early morning hours, members were dispatched to Flower Hill School where polling was set to take place throughout that day; one of the poll workers was reported to be unconscious. His fellow poll workers activated the emergency response and began to give CPR. Upon arrival, the rescue crew found a patient with no pulse and no respirations; essentially dead. The crew quickly went into action, taking over CPR compressions, setting up oxygen, and attaching the patient to an AED. He was shocked three times and then transported to Huntington Hospital where he ultimately recovered and is now happy to be home with his friends and family and is grateful to be celebrating the holiday season. The following members were recognized by the Town Board for their heroic action and lifesaving efforts: . Dominic Spada . James Costanzo . Keith Freda . John Hassett . Steve Lapp . Andy Magerle . Alex Niedziela . Rick Oh . Chris Mahoney (Paramedic) According to The American Heart Association, less than 10% of people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting survive. The patient's wife, who also attended the Board meeting to congratulate and thank the members who saved her husband, was very glad that her husband is in this elite echelon of statistics.
