The fire service can be challenging, as well as rewarding. I believe that no matter how long you are a member (and I have been a member since 1968), you can never say, "I have seen it all!" While many alarms are routine, eventually you use your training and skills to cope with a situation that you have not encountered before.

Halesite Members Conduct Fire Prevention Training at Bay Crest Beach Club

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Members of the Halesite Fire Department visited the day camp at Bay Crest Beach August 5th on a good will visit promoting fire safety and prevention. Organized by Lieutenant Erik Weber, camp children were shown what a firefighter looks and sounds like while wearing their turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus. Members also showed off a department ambulance and fire truck. During the visit, children had their blood pressure taken and were given the opportunity to spary a real fire hose.

Speaking of the event, Lt. Weber said, "It's important for all of us who volunteer in Halesite to be ambassadors of the fire department. We need to have good relationships with the community in order to work effectively with them. We also need to involve the children so as to keep up the pipeline of future volunteers."

Pictured above, Ex-Chief Mike Magerle shows the children one of Halesite's Class A Pumpers used to fight fires in our community. More photos can be found in the photo gallery on this website.

Anyone interested in joining the Halesite Fire Department should call fire headquaters at 631-427-1910. People can volunteer for just rescue calls as well as for just firefighting.
