The fire service can be challenging, as well as rewarding. I believe that no matter how long you are a member (and I have been a member since 1968), you can never say, "I have seen it all!" While many alarms are routine, eventually you use your training and skills to cope with a situation that you have not encountered before.

Halesite Urges Residents to Clear Snow Around Fire Hydrants

Friday, January 28, 2011

The Halesite Fire Department urges residents to remember clearing snow from around fire hydrants following the most recent winter storm. With nearly record levels of snow accumulation over the past 30 days, fire hydrants across the area are at risk of being blocked in by snow. Blocked hydrants means slower response to extinguishing structure fires which can result in catastrophic consequences. To assure fire department access, residents are strongly encouraged to clear a path to fire hydrants and remove snow from all sides.

Pictured above, Halesite firefighter Mike Conforti is seen digging out a fire hydrant that is completely hidden by snow. All that is visible is the metal snow flag rising up above more than three feet of snow.
